As we age, we may need varying levels of medical care — simple things, like help remembering to take pills, and more complicated care, such as the delivery of intravenous (IV) medications.

What is skilled nursing?

While assisted living or at-home care might provide more simple help, skilled nursing thrives at the more complicated end of the spectrum, providing 24/7 medical care.

Typically delivered under the supervision of licensed nurses, skilled nursing includes tasks like complex wound dressings, therapeutic rehabilitation, monitoring and adjusting to rapidly changing health conditions and similar items of care.

How is a skilled nursing home different from an assisted living center?

Assisted living communities often provide some medical care, but only skilled nursing facilities offer around-the-clock, comprehensive skilled care.

This is important, because as we age, we often advance to needing higher levels of medical attention. While north Whatcom County has a generous number of assisted living communities and adult family homes, CHCC is the only skilled nursing center in the area, according to Medicare.gov. We provide long-term care and therapeutic rehabilitation to people from Sumas, Everson, Nooksack, Custer, Ferndale and other rural areas in Whatcom County.

The benefits of local skilled nursing care

That CHCC is located in Lynden means that care is available without having to drive to Bellingham. For family and friends who live in the Lynden area, it is easy and convenient to visit loved ones. What’s more, because north Whatcom County is full of small and tight-knit communities, the care given at CHCC is said to feel like it is provided by friends and neighbors — by the same friendly, local people you might see in the grocery store or know from church.

CHCC employs many registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants dedicated to ensuring that challenging medical needs can be met in north Whatcom County. All of this is done under the oversight of our medical director and nurse practitioner, both of whom have years of experience caring for the older generation.

Since our founding in 1956, it has been Christian Health Care Center’s mission to serve and to provide a higher level of care in our community. We are deeply rooted in this area, we love the people here, and we consider it an honor to provide important skilled nursing care during one of the most important phases of life.
