Exercise is good for the body and mind. It’s that simple.

As we get older, sometimes we have a tendency to get sedentary — our feet ache, we’re tired, we don’t think we have as many opportunities.

However, getting up and getting moving can help to improve a number of medical conditions. And not only that, it’s fun — especially in Whatcom County, where the idyllic scenery offers myriad opportunities for staying active, no matter how old we are.

Here are some opportunities near our Lynden health care campus for enjoying the fresh Northwest air and enjoying time with your elderly loved ones:

Short walks on the Lynden trail system. From Bender Fields, just across the street from the Christian Health Care Center grounds, you can walk along the Jim Kaemingk Sr Trail along Fishtrap Creek down to City Park. The trail is wonderfully maintained by the city’s Parks Department, which also manages the massive Berthusen Park, the 236-acre playground west of downtown that’s well worth a visit.

After-hours window shopping on Front Street. With its Dutch motif and adorable storefronts, Lynden has some of the best window shopping around. The many window displays along Front Street in downtown Lynden offer the perfect counterpart to an afternoon stroll through the pleasant bustle of downtown.

Local festivals and parades. From the Farmer’s Day Parade in June to the Northwest Raspberry Festival in July to the Puget Sound Antique Tractor & Machinery Association show and Northwest Washington Fair in August, Lynden is chock full of fun, family-oriented events all summer long. Seriously, if your loved one is into good food, antique tractor and farming demonstrations or a good joke (did we mention that Jeff Foxworthy will be at the fair this year?), Lynden is the place to be.

Activity does wonders for the mind, body and soul, and Christian Health Care Center — along with the surrounding community of Lynden — offers a place for your parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors to live life to the fullest extent possible. So, with all of these things to do in Lynden, we hope to see you out and about this summer!
