Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent resident spotlight interview we did with Bobbin.

Have you lived in places besides Lynden?

Yes, I was born in Tacoma and have lived all over Washington State in my lifetime. I lived in Sumas from 1989-1990 during a time when there was a bad flood. Thankfully, FEMA bought my house with the condition that it would never be rebuilt, so I moved on. The property had been reclassified from residential to commercial, so it was valued higher. I had good insurance people helping me.

What was your first job?

I was a harvest cook for the wheat crew (about 20 people) in Lincoln County, close to a small town called Palmer, Washington.

What other types of work did you do before retiring?

I worked for a former candidate for the Democratic governor position. I was a librarian for 40 years in the Nooksack School District. I worked in the libraries and oversaw all librarians for a time.

What was your favorite thing about the work you did?

The best thing about being a librarian was the kids, especially the younger ones. However, my job involved all the grade levels. I loved reading aloud to the students and teaching them library skills. Interestingly, there are staff members working here at CHCC who are former students of mine!

What is the one thing that you have been most proud of in your life?

I am most proud of my family. I have one daughter who has been blessed with six children and 11 great-grandchildren!

What is the hardest thing you’ve lived through, and how did you get through it?

One of the most difficult things was when my son-in-law died in a farming accident. The Lord carried me through, and the children brought a lot of joy.

What was your favorite decade and why?

I loved the 50s while I was in high school (graduated in 1959). Also, being a grandmother is just fabulous and brings me much joy!

Who is your favorite author or musician?

I am a very eclectic reader and enjoy all types of books. One author I like is Barbara Kingsolver. I enjoy Celtic music by Enya and very much like Kitaro’s “Silk Road Suite,” a Japanese synthesizer composer.

Do you have a favorite song, inspirational quote or Bible verse?

My favorite quote is “Learning is half the fun of living.”

What is one life lesson you learned from your parents?

From my parents, I learned to never give up.

What is one piece of advice you would give a 16-year-old person?

Endure, things get better!

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?

Most people don’t know that I used to judge horse shows and did some training. My daughter was a champion rider who raised horses to show.

What is one thing that you like about living at CHCC?

I like the staff. They are careful, gracious and loving! Thank you.
