Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent resident spotlight interview we did with Mary.

Have you lived in other places besides Lynden?

Yes. I previously lived in Ferndale, Eastern Washington and Newton, Kansas.

What was your first job?

Early in life, before I married Bob in 1958, I had the privilege of being a driver for the strawberry bus for field workers.

What other types of work did you do before retiring?

While raising four children, I also taught piano and, for 20 years, was a church secretary at Birch Bay Bible Church.

(Mary continues to share her talents and gifts by playing the piano in our front lobby as well as singing for special occasions and playing music for other residents. She has a beautiful voice and a joyful spirit.)

What was your favorite decade to live in and why?

The 50s! That was the time Bob and I got married.

What is one thing that you have been most proud of in your life?

The highlight of my life was the births and weddings of all our four children: Nancy, Rita, Norman and Roger. I enjoyed being a mother and watching our children get married over the years. I was also proud and thankful when the Lord blessed us with our first grandchild.

What is the hardest thing that you’ve lived through and how did you get through it?

Among the blessings, there were also challenges. Some of the hardest things that Bob and I lived through were surgeries. Together, with the Lord’s help, we endured and came through them.

Who is your favorite author or musician?

The Gaithers Vocal Band.

Do you have a favorite song, inspirational quote or bible verse?

Yes! Some of my favorite songs are “Constantly Abiding,” “The Longer I serve Him,” “Through it All” and “He Touched Me.”

What is one life lesson that you learned from your parents?

My parents taught me that church attendance was very important, and I took this to heart in my life.

What is one piece of advice that you would give a 16-year-old person?

I would tell a young person to stay close to the Lord.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?

I can whistle and hum harmoniously at the same time.

What is one thing that you like about living at CHCC?

I love the Christian atmosphere and the good care that I receive at the CHCC.
