Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent resident spotlight Q&A session we did with Judy H.
Have you lived in other places besides Lynden?
Yes. I grew up in Costa Mesa, California, before our kids were born. After moving to this area, we lived on Axton Road in Whatcom County.
What was your first job?
My first job was working as a visiting nurse for people who lived locally.
What other types of work did you do before retiring?
I was a mother to two children, a boy and a girl. I also helped the school district with transportation.
What was your favorite thing about the work you did?
I enjoyed meeting people.
What is one thing that you have been most proud of in your life?
One thing I still have is my teddy bear from when I was born. I keep him in my window. He has seen a lot of wear and tear over the years and is now 80 years old!

What is the hardest thing that you’ve lived through, and how did you get through it?
One of the hardest things I went through was losing my dad when he was 47 years old from a heart attack. It was very difficult for me. I still have furniture that he made for us. He also built houses.
Family and friends were helpful during that time, and we also had a church service.
What was your favorite decade to live in, and why?
When we were raising kids and were active with Job’s Daughters.
Editor’s note: Job’s Daughters is a youth organization for young women that focuses on leadership, service and community involvement.
Who is your favorite author or musician?
I’m not much of a reader and don’t really listen to music, but I prefer rock and roll. I also played the accordion when I was a child.
Do you have a favorite song, inspirational quote or Bible verse?
Psalm 5:3: “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.”
What is one life lesson that you learned from your parents?
Be kind to one another.
What is one piece of advice that you would give a 16-year-old person?
Stay out of trouble!
What is one thing most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?
I’ve had a hearing problem for a while, but I’m very good at reading lips.
What is one thing that you like about living at CHCC?
I enjoy the activities, all of them.
