Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent resident spotlight interview we did with Joyce.
Have you lived in other places besides Lynden?
I was born in Oakland, California, at Providence Hospital. I also lived in Sacramento.
What was your first job?
My first job was doing office work at Rother’s Sewing Center in San Carlos, California.
What other types of work did you do before retiring?
I also worked at Wells Fargo Bank. I got my cosmetology license in 1957 and then opened my beauty shop, Ultimate Hair Care, in 1959.
What was your favorite thing about the work you did?
My favorite thing was the people and clients. I remember having celebrations and holiday gatherings with them!
What is one thing that you have been most proud of in your life?
I’m most proud of Kenny, my son. I adopted him when he was 5 months old.
What is the hardest thing that you’ve lived through, and how did you get through it?
Turning 84. I have a lot of emotions about it, but you just got to take things one day at a time.
What was your favorite decade to live in, and why?
My favorite time in life was being a mother to my son, Kenny!
Who is your favorite author or musician?
My favorite musician is Nat King Cole. I like the oldies!
Do you have a favorite song, inspirational quote or Bible verse?
My favorite song is “Sentimental Journey.”
What is one life lesson that you learned from your parents?
I was raised by my grandparents, my mother’s parents. The most important thing they taught me was to be a good person.
What is one piece of advice that you would give a 16-year-old person?
Stop and think before you do anything!
What is one thing most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?
People know all there is to know about me; I’m an open book.
What is one thing that you like about living at CHCC?
The helpful and kind staff here at CHCC!
