Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent resident spotlight Q&A session we did with Jean V.

Have you lived in other places besides Lynden?
I lived in South Dakota until sixth grade. Then we moved to this area. I graduated from Lynden High School. Then I went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and got a teaching certificate.

What was your first job?
I picked berries in the fields surrounding Lynden. Right after high school, I worked at Pine Rest Hospital in Grand Rapids.

What other types of work did you do before retiring?
I taught elementary school in Sumas, then taught first and second grade at Lynden Christian School. After a few years of teaching and raising children, I helped my husband at the New Crescent Department Store in downtown Lynden.

The Crescent was a family clothing store for all ages. I worked nights after the kids were in bed and arranged clothing displays. I bought clothing at the Seattle Market. I was instrumental in moving the annual Lynden sidewalk sale into the streets, which brought people from as far away as Seattle.

Later, we opened the Baby Buggy store for maternity clothes, baby clothes and baby furniture, followed by a toy store called Dolls and Bears. After I retired, I enjoyed volunteering at the Second Chance Store in Lynden.

What was your favorite thing about the work you did?
I got the most joy from seeing people who didn’t have a lot of money get the things they wanted when we discounted items and held clearance sales. I enjoy giving to others.

What is one thing that you have been most proud of in your life?
I am proud of my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Three of my great-grandchildren are named after me.

What is the hardest thing that you’ve lived through, and how did you get through it?
At age 58, my husband had the first of several heart attacks. I cared for him for 23 years. We could not fulfill our dream of doing mission work together. Our lives went in a different direction, but God remained faithful to us through it all.

Who is your favorite author or musician?
My favorite authors are Eugene Peterson and Max Lucado.

Do you have a favorite song, inspirational quote or Bible verse?
My favorite inspirational quote is, “There is bright hope for tomorrow.” My favorite song is “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.”

What is one life lesson that you learned from your parents?
My organizational skills came from my mom. My dad gave me a sense of fun. He was always honest and friendly. They were both hard workers, kind and always took care of others.

What is one piece of advice that you would give a 16-year-old person?
Love the Lord.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?
I love go-kart racing, and I love to win. I am very competitive. My motto is “Mind over matter.” I am not stubborn—I am determined.

What is one thing that you like about living at CHCC?
I can be honest with everyone here, and they take good care of me. My family is grateful for the care and kindness given to me.
