Everyone has unique experiences in life. Each person has a story to tell and words of wisdom that can be shared with others. With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to some of the wonderful people who live here at CHCC. Here is a recent Q&A session we did with Frank B.

Have you lived in other places besides Lynden?
Yes, I was born in Chicago, and I had one older brother—he was my protector growing up. When I was about 22, I moved to Anaheim, California.

What was your first job?
I worked at a printing company in Chicago when I was still in high school. We printed everything from Bibles to magazines.

What other types of work did you do before retiring?
I went to college for two years, then got drafted right out of school.

I spent two years in Vietnam in the military, then went to work for a printing company in Anaheim. I really loved printing, so I stayed with it.

What was your favorite thing about the work you did?
I liked printing a lot. It’s fascinating. I printed magazines, newspapers, bingo cards, books—you name it. I also got free tickets to Disneyland all the time because the company was in Anaheim. I’ve been to Disneyland at least five or six times.

What is one thing you have been most proud of in your life?
I’m most proud that I served my time in the Army in Vietnam. I had two uncles on the draft board, so I didn’t have much choice.

I am also very proud of my two kids. My son is a fireman, and my daughter is a nurse.

What is the hardest thing you’ve lived through, and how did you get through it?
My time in the Vietnam War. I witnessed many things that most people don’t see—many atrocities. I was in a special unit. I tried to be a smart soldier, and I prayed.

What was your favorite decade to live in, and why?
The 1960s for sure because of the music. Beatlemania—I loved all of it. Because of the music, I started to think about college.

Who is your favorite author or musician?
I liked all the music of the ’60s, and I read a lot in Vietnam, but I don’t really have favorites.

What is one life lesson you learned from your parents?
Save your money!

What is one piece of advice you would give a 16-year-old?
Stay in school. Go to college!

What is one thing most people don’t know about you, but you wish they did?
I get along with everybody. I like people. I like to talk to everyone.

I’m Italian, and I’m a good cook. I miss Chicago pizza!

What is one thing you like about living at CHCC?
The people. The staff are excellent. It’s like there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for me.
