Strengthening connections with loved ones in long-term care helps to foster emotional support, provide comfort and enhance their well-being. By nurturing these bonds, we contribute to their sense of belonging and happiness. We create opportunities for meaningful exchanges that enrich the lives of younger generations, teaching them the value of empathy, compassion and the importance of family connections across all stages of life.

There are many ways to show a loved one living in long-term care that they are not forgotten. You can send mail or their favorite treats, help them decorate their living space (opens in a new tab) or simply give them a call to say hello. Here are some other ways to stay involved and show support:

Schedule regular visits. Instead of sporadic visits, establish a regular schedule, even if it’s just for a short period each week. Consistency is key to showing your senior relatives they are a priority. Try visiting at different times of day to see your loved one in various routines or activities.

Meaningful communication. Don’t just sit and chat (though that’s important too). Plan activities they enjoy, such as looking through photo albums, playing card or board games or going for a walk. Show your elderly loved one how to use technology (opens in a new tab) to reach out to other family members as well. If you’d like to bring your pet on visits, this blog post (opens in a new tab) shares important guidelines.

Participating in their care. This shows your commitment and allows you to voice concerns. Join discussions with long-term care nurses, social workers and other care planners to develop a comprehensive care plan covering medical, emotional and practical aspects. Help your loved one advocate for their needs if necessary and build relationships with caregivers and staff.

Offer help. If they need assistance getting around or participating in activities, offer transportation and support. Include them in family or community events like festivals, concerts, religious services or other activities they would enjoy.

Maintaining strong connections with loved ones living in a Whatcom County long-term care center is a meaningful way to honor and support them while enriching your own life. By making time to visit, engage in meaningful activities, participate in their care and find creative ways to show your support, you can foster a meaningful bond. Your efforts will bring joy to your loved ones and set a powerful example for future generations about the enduring value of family and compassion.
