Volunteers at CHCC are caring in action. They give their time, energy and compassion to support residents in meaningful ways—whether it’s sharing a smile, lending a hand or attentively listening. Through these spotlights, we’ll introduce you to some of the kind people who help make life at CHCC brighter.

What year did you start Volunteering at CHCC?
I served as the ombudsman here starting in 2019 and then became a volunteer in 2025.

Editor’s note: An ombuds is an independent advocate for nursing home residents. The role focuses on protecting residents’ rights, listening to concerns and helping resolve issues related to care, quality of life and communication with staff, ensuring residents’ voices are heard and respected.

Do you have a personal connection to long-term care or a special reason why volunteering with seniors is meaningful to you? If not, what inspired you to volunteer at CHCC?
I have watched what my parents and friends’ families have endured, and I want to help others going through similar situations and make sure their rights are being honored.

What types of activities do you enjoy most as a volunteer?
Listening to residents and seeing the joy they have while participating in activities.

Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while volunteering?
Watching a 100-year-old resident complete an art project.

Have you learned anything from the residents that has stuck with you?
They have wonderful memories and stories that help you see how they have enriched many lives.

Has there been anything that has surprised you about volunteering at CHCC?
The caring and friendliness throughout the facility is always there for the residents.
