Volunteers at CHCC are caring in action. They give their time, energy and compassion to support residents in meaningful ways—whether it’s sharing a smile, lending a hand or attentively listening. Through these spotlights, we’ll introduce you to some of the kind people who help make life at CHCC brighter.

What year did you start volunteering at CHCC?
I started in January 2024, shortly after I retired from working in the therapeutic recreation department.

Do you have a personal connection to long-term care or a special reason why volunteering with seniors is meaningful to you? If not, what inspired you to volunteer at CHCC?
I worked at CHCC for nine years and fell in love with the t-rec department and what they do. I enjoy working with the elderly and wanted to keep seeing the residents and contributing. My dad was also a CHCC resident from October 2020 to March 2024.

What types of activities do you enjoy most as a volunteer?
Playing piano is my favorite. That’s what I do regularly for the Bible study. I also enjoy special events such as the carnival and holiday activities.

Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while volunteering?
I’ve had several very special friendships with some of the women residents. Even though I was supposed to be helping them, they ended up giving me so much more.

Have you learned anything from the residents that has stuck with you?
So many things—being content with whatever God brings into my life and finding joy even when things are difficult. I’ve been very inspired by the residents’ faith; it has encouraged me.

Caring in action

Has there been anything that surprised you about volunteering at CHCC?
I think we should all give back in some way. Even if it’s a small thing, I always leave feeling better knowing that I helped the staff or brightened a resident’s day.

How does volunteering at CHCC fit into your routine and other activities? How often do you volunteer—daily, weekly, monthly, as needed?
Being retired, I have lots of free time. CHCC has been wonderful about letting me volunteer on the days that work for me. I normally play piano every Thursday afternoon for Bible study.

What skills and qualities do you think make a great volunteer in a long-term care center?
You need to love people, love helping and have a servant’s heart. It’s important to be patient and gentle.

How would you describe the staff and overall atmosphere at CHCC?
I love the staff! They are amazing, very caring, dedicated and hard-working. They’re gifted in their roles. They are very easy to work with. They’ve become friends.

If you could give someone who is considering volunteering at CHCC one piece of advice, what would it be?
Look at the activity calendar and see what activity would be a good fit for you. Hopefully, you find something you’ll enjoy, then try it.
