Volunteers at CHCC are caring in action. They give their time, energy and compassion to support residents in meaningful ways—whether it’s sharing a smile, lending a hand or attentively listening. Through these spotlights, we’ll introduce you to some of the kind people who help make life at CHCC brighter.
What year did you start volunteering here?
I started in spring 2024.
Do you have a personal connection to long-term care or a special reason why volunteering with seniors is meaningful to you? If not, what inspired you to volunteer at CHCC?
I saw an article in the paper in 2023 where Tonja was quoted saying CHCC needed volunteers. That planted the seed, but I had other things going on at the time and it took me a while to follow up. I’ve also had several friends with illnesses who needed full-time nursing care and a close friend living with cerebral palsy.
What types of activities do you enjoy most as a volunteer?
I love bingo, bowling and when the animals come to visit. I also love getting to know the residents and visiting with them one-on-one when I take them back to their rooms. I’m the same age as some of them, so we have lots to talk about. I feel very lucky that I get to volunteer at CHCC.
Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while volunteering?
Going to 2nd Chance Thrift Store with the residents was especially fun. It was so nice to see them shopping and enjoying themselves.
Have you learned anything from the residents that has stuck with you?
I’ve noticed that the residents try very hard to stay positive and upbeat, and they’re also very kind to each other. I’m inspired by their positive attitudes.
Has there been anything that surprised you about volunteering at CHCC?
Not really surprised, but I have noticed that every staff member in every area is extremely dedicated, kind and loving to each resident. That’s really what the residents need—to know they are loved and cared for.

How does volunteering at CHCC fit into your routine and other activities? How often do you volunteer—daily, weekly, monthly or as needed?
I volunteer about once a week, sometimes twice a week. It fits into my schedule very well because I live close by. And if I have a conflict, I know I can just let Michele, CHCC’s volunteer coordinator, know in advance and she’s very understanding.
What skills and qualities do you think make a great volunteer in a long-term care center?
Patience, kindness and friendliness. Being observant about what needs to be done and being willing to jump in and help when needed.
How would you describe the staff and overall atmosphere at CHCC?
Very capable and attentive, friendly, competent and organized.
If you could give someone who is considering volunteering at CHCC one piece of advice, what would it be?
I would tell them that even doing small tasks for the residents makes such a big difference. I’d encourage them to try it and see how you can relate to the residents and the staff members.
