November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, a time to recognize the health care professionals, caregivers and volunteers who support people living with serious or life-limiting illnesses. It also offers families in Whatcom County an opportunity to learn about hospice care, understand their options and consider what comfort and dignity mean during life’s final stages.

At Christian Health Care Center in Lynden, Washington, compassionate care reflects our mission to serve others with love, respect and dignity.

Understanding hospice and palliative care

Hospice and palliative care both focus on comfort and quality of life, but they serve different needs.

Palliative care helps people manage symptoms and stress associated with serious illness. Patients can receive palliative care at any stage of an illness, including while pursuing treatment.

Hospice care supports patients as they approach the end of life, choosing comfort care rather than curative treatment. Hospice services may include pain and symptom management, emotional support, spiritual care and guidance for family members.

Both approaches recognize the value of listening to patients, respecting their wishes and supporting the people closest to them.

Supporting patients and families

A serious illness affects more than a person’s physical health. It can bring emotional, spiritual and practical concerns for patients and their loved ones.

Hospice care gives families access to trained professionals who can answer questions, help manage symptoms and provide support during a difficult time. Spiritual care can also offer space for prayer, reflection and conversations about faith.

At CHCC, we believe each person deserves care that recognizes their individual needs, values and preferences. A familiar voice, a visit from family or a quiet moment together can bring comfort and connection.

Expanding Hospice Care in Whatcom County

CHCC continues its commitment to caring for local families through plans for The Hospice Suites in Lynden.

In addition to hospice services delivered in shared rooms, The Hospice Suites at CHCC add nine private patient rooms, a family gathering space, a reflection room, a bathing suite and access to a sanctuary garden. These spaces will give patients and families a peaceful setting for inpatient hospice care close to home.

For residents of Lynden, Everson, Nooksack, Sumas, Blaine, Ferndale and surrounding Whatcom County communities, expanding local hospice services will offer another option when planning end-of-life care.

Continuing a commitment to compassionate care

During National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, we recognize the people who provide comfort and support to patients and families. We also encourage families to talk about end-of-life wishes before a crisis makes those conversations more difficult.
