Community members interested in earning an amateur radio license are invited to participate in a series of license review sessions this fall at Christian Health Care Center, 855 Aaron Drive, Lynden.
Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Nov. 2. The Lynden classes will combine instruction provided virtually with live demonstrations at CHCC.
Why is CHCC hosting these sessions?
Christian Health Care Center incorporates ham radio into its crisis communications plan as a backup system if traditional phone or internet service is disrupted. Volunteer operators regularly participate in practice drills to ensure communication can continue during emergencies such as severe weather or widespread power outages.

What can attendees expect during each class?
The sessions will review material from the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 6th Edition and provide an opportunity for participants to ask questions as they prepare for the Technician Class amateur radio exam. Participants should bring paper and something to write with.
How much does it cost to become an amateur radio operator?
There is no cost to attend the amateur radio classes; however, registration is required. Participants are responsible for paying licensing and exam fees directly to the licensing organization. Lower rates for license candidates younger than 18 are available.
Purchase of the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 6th Edition is recommended but not required.
Where will testing be conducted?
Testing will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Whatcom County Emergency Operations Center, 3888 Sound Way, Bellingham. Participants are responsible for a $15 exam fee.
