Volunteers at CHCC are caring in action. They give their time, energy and compassion to support residents in meaningful ways—whether it’s sharing a smile, lending a hand or attentively listening. Through these spotlights, we’ll introduce you to some of the kind people who help make life at CHCC brighter.

What year did you start volunteering at CHCC?
I started in the spring of 2023.

Do you have a personal connection to long-term care or a special reason why volunteering with seniors is meaningful to you?
I worked at CHCC for 29 years as a nurse. I enjoy helping people have a good quality of life—little things like getting their nails done make them so happy.

What types of activities do you enjoy most as a volunteer?
Animals as Natural Therapy is a favorite because it connects residents with pets and animals they had in the past.

Can you share a memorable experience you’ve had while volunteering?
The outing to Van Wingerden’s was a favorite. I went with one resident and we picked out flowers for the courtyard gardens. She enjoyed it so much and told me stories about flowers she had grown. I love flowers, so it was fun to share that moment with her.

Have you learned anything from the residents that has stuck with you?
I’ve learned to be very grateful for my health and the full, blessed life I’ve had. The residents are grateful even for the little things you do to help them.

Has there been anything that surprised you about volunteering at CHCC?
Yes—I’ve realized how much I enjoy being with the residents and spending time with them, without the big responsibilities of being their nurse.

How does volunteering at CHCC fit into your routine?
It fits in fine. I usually volunteer on Monday afternoons. I like that it lets me stay in touch with coworkers I’ve known for years.

What skills or qualities make a great volunteer in long-term care?
You have to be patient. I just love helping the elderly and seeing them happy.

How would you describe the staff and overall atmosphere at CHCC?
It’s very uplifting. The staff are kind and patient with the residents, and they respect one another.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering volunteering at CHCC, what would it be?
Just give it a try! Try something new—you might discover that you really enjoy connecting with the residents. This is their home, so every little thing you do to help is appreciated.
